I look at lab results differently than Western doctors. I look at how I can improve your health and help you function better and help you achieve your optimal health and wellness goal. For example, the end range for Fasting Blood Glucose is 99 -100mg/dl (depending on the labs used), however if you score consistently at 95 mg/dl or higher for the last 3 years, I will start to implement a blood glucose stabilization protocol for you as those numbers would indicate that you are pre-diabetic and if no changes are made to your diet and lifestyle, you will be diabetic in a few years.
Thyroid function is another BIG reason why patients seek acupuncture care at Healing Circle. Often patients said that ‘my thyroid is fine’ but upon investigation they are exposed to the following factors that affect thyroid’s function:
1) High estrogen
Female patients may have some of the following symptoms : bloating, swelling and tenderness in the breasts, decreased sex drive, irregular menstrual periods, headaches, mood swings, fibrocystic developments in the breast, weight gain, hair loss, cold hands or feet, feeling tired or lacking energy, difficulty with memory, trouble sleeping and/ or increased symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or PMS.
Male patients may experience the following symptoms:
Infertility - Estrogen is partly responsible for creating healthy sperm. When estrogen levels are high, sperm levels in semen may fall. This can lead to fertility issues.
Gynecomastia - Estrogen may stimulate breast tissue growth. Men with too much estrogen may start developing larger breasts.
Erectile dysfunction - A balance of both testosterone and estrogen is important for healthy sexual growth and development. Sexual function may be impacted when these hormones become imbalanced. Men with high levels of estrogen may have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection.
2) Heavy metal toxicity
Exposure to mercury or lead through can happen through diet, medications or through work and play. If you are in a job that deals with chemicals, your exposure will be higher than the average person
3) Chemicals and xenobiotic
Sometimes we do not need to look far as to how much we expose ourselves to chemicals daily. Our household cleaning products, make-up, haircare and body care may contain chemicals that will disrupt our thyroid and other hormonal function. Xenobiotics include:
• synthetic drugs
• natural poisons
• food additives
• environmental pollutants
• antibiotics etc.
Please refer to www.ewg.org to check the toxicity level of any of your household products. You can then make informed choices as to which products in the market will limit/ reduce your exposure to toxins.
Stress manifest differently for most patients. This could range from headaches, irritability, lack of concentration, depression, pain, emotional eating or fatigue. Stress not only affects you physically but also mentally and emotionally.
Acupuncture and other healing modalities like yoga, meditation, exercises are all useful tools to help you relax your mind, calm your spirit and let you handle your stressors better.
5) Liver dysfunction
Elevated cholesterol level or abnormal liver enzymes levels are telltale signs that your thyroid is under stress. As every aspect of your health need to work in synch, when one is is in disharmony, the rest will receive its toll sooner or later.
How Can We Help You?
During your initial acupuncture visit, we will do a thorough consultation and evaluation of your health. We will also formulate a strategy and plan both short and long term change to your health and how your body functions.
We require a commitment from you to be an active participant in your health’s transformations. Most often when your thyroid shows sign of distress, it is indicative that this is a chronic health issue. Hence, a period of 3-6 months or longer is not uncommon to see changes in your health. Over time with treatment, you will see that your lists of complaints will shrink in terms of frequency, duration and intensity.
