Bell's Palsy can happen unexpectedly. Patients often reported that they 'woke up and saw that half of their face has drooped'. Others may have slight or low grade fever, pain along their jawline, drooling and difficulty talking or smiling.
Bell's Palsy is different from a stroke. In stroke, some sort of brain dysfuction is involved and recovery takes longer. The good news is Bell's Palsy patients respond very favorably to acupuncture. The key to full recovery is the timing of when patients come in for treatment.
It is highly recommended that once diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, patient start acupuncture treatment within 1-2 weeks. Treatments have to be consistent i.e. 2 times per week for 8 weeks.
The purpose of each treatment is to improve circulation, promote tissue healing and reduce tightness in the face. Depending on how bad the facial droop is, acupuncture treatments can help lift up the skin and allow for symmetry to occur.
Bell's Palsy can also affect a person's emotional and mental well-being. Due to changes in a person's look, they may suffer from depression, anxiety or lack of self confidence in social settings.
