In my clinic, most patients think about acupuncture as a last resort i.e. they tried everything and it has not worked or they are just told that surgery is the only option. These patients have chronic health conditions and often have internal medical problems as well e.g. high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, overweight by 30lbs or more and heart disease. Common sense will tell you that this person’s health cannot be resolved in 5 sessions. A good strategy for this patient is to first fight the fire that they are experiencing e.g. back pain due to being overweight or numbness due to progression of diabetes. After a good 6 months of care and dilgence we then work on building foundation to good health. In general, patients need weekly treatments to fight the fire and then monthly treatment for building a foundation.
Many patients are of moderately good health and want to use acupuncture to help manage stress and occasional minor aches and pains. This patient will do well with bi-weekly or monthly maintenance treatments.
Once educated with the benefits of acupuncture, patients tend to use this modality as their first line of treatment. Most participate in the 21 day Purification program. We review their blood work, keep in touch with their doctors and work to reduce prescription dosages.
Examine your health care goals before considering acupuncture. This 3000 year old medicine has the ability to reset your health and promote longevity. Be an active participant in your health. I applaud my patients who try to improve their health for their families, and impart good habits for their kids. It is not too late to change anything you want in your life. Our body has amazing healing abilities provided you give it a chance.
